'Look at that bird!' — why tiny moments decide a couple's fate
Psychologist John Gottman followed newlyweds for six years and noticed 'bids' — any attempt to get a partner's attention: a smile, a wink, a request for advice, a remark like 'look at that bird'.
You can turn towards a bid (respond), turn away (miss it) or turn against it (snap at it). The difference was striking: couples who stayed married turned towards each other's bids 86% of the time; those who divorced, just 33%.
Gottman Institute advice: learn to notice bids and their hidden meaning ('look at the bird' means 'be with me'), make bids openly yourself, and talk together about how you tend to respond.
What it means for you: even while dating, notice whether someone responds to your small signals — and whether you respond to theirs. It matters more than grand gestures.
